The origin of electricity
The origin of electricity has become more important with increasing environmental awareness. We offer our customers the opportunity to make responsible choices.
A genuinely responsible choice
We offer our customers an easy way to make responsible and verifiably ecological choices. Updating a company’s electricity contract to make it ecological and climate-friendly is the choice of the future. By increasing the production of renewable electricity, we can help to mitigate climate change. For a company to communicate its commitment to responsible choices, its actions must be verifiable.
Guarantee of Origin is a certificate that guarantees that the electricity comes from renewable energy sources. In Finland, Guarantees of Origin are issued by Finextra Oy, a subsidiary owned by the transmission system operator Fingrid Oyj.
How is the origin of renewable electricity verified?
The origin of the electricity is verified by using the pan-European system for Guarantees of Origin. Certificates of origin are issued for electricity production based on renewable energy sources registered in the system, in proportion to the amount of electricity generated.
The Act on Guarantees of Origin for Energy sets out requirements for electricity suppliers to acquire and cancel these certificates of origin, corresponding to the amount of electricity from renewable energy sources that is supplied to end users. In addition, the verification carried out by Oomi is validated by an external auditor on an annual basis.
EKOenergy – energy produced sustainably
We also supply EKOenergy-labelled electricity to our business customers. EKOenergy is particularly suitable for companies that wish to prioritise sustainability and work to protect the environment and natural biodiversity. The EKOenergy label is an internationally recognised quality label for electricity, gas, heating and cooling produced from renewable energy sources.
Pricing and subscriptions
The price of renewable energy is determined by the market, just like the price of electricity itself. The pricing of Guarantees of Origin, based on different energy production methods, is influenced by the desirability of the production method among consumers, actual production volumes, the country and time of production, as well as the extent to which the guarantee of origin in question meets the requirements of various environmental quality systems.
Renewable energy must always be subscribed to no later than in February following the year of delivery, so that we have time to purchase and amortise the Guarantees of Origin purchased for our customers. However, we recommend taking action in good time when the market price level looks reasonable. In addition to the current year, Guarantees of Origin can be purchased for the next four years.
Distribution of electricity sources
Electricity suppliers must inform their customers each year of the energy sources from which they have purchased the electricity they sell. The information on the origin of electricity for 2024 has been determined in accordance with the Energy Authority’s current guidelines. The information for the previous year is published annually in July, once the production data is available.
